Financial Assistance Donations

Through a donation program JTHCC provides limited financial assistance through a donation program. This program was established to assist Juneau-area Tribal Members in times of emergencies when the sheer weight of financial need overshadows and creates more hardship.

This is not a general assistance program. Funding is generated through the JTHCC’s gaming program and other fund-raising efforts. Program funding is subject to availability.

The program will assist with up to $350 per tribal household annual from January through December of each year.

Eligibility

Preference is given to JTHCC enrolled Tribal Members and their spouses and family members; ANCSA shareholder spouses and family members; non-Native spouses and family members.

Family members are defined as parents, children, siblings, and spouses. In order to apply for assistance, applicants must be:

An enrolled Tribal Citizen of Central Council Tlingit & Haida

On the Juneau voting list for CCTHITA

An ANCSA shareholder

A resident who resides in the Juneau-Douglas area

Types of Financial Assistance

Elders (Age 62+)

A financial assistance donation may be provided to tribal elders with special needs such as medical, housing, electrical, or heating costs, as well as health or safety needs. Payments must be made directly to the applicable vendor. Each elder and their spouse are eligible separately.

Funeral

Financial assistance donations may be made toward family funeral expenses, along with an in-kind donation for the use of the JTHCC Hall (if available, meaning no previously
scheduled paid rentals).

Dental/Vision/Audio

Financial assistance donations may be provided for costs associated with obtaining eyeglasses/contacts, dentures, or hearing aids. Examination costs are not covered. Payments will be made directly to the vendor.

Terminal Illness/Chronic Care

Financial assistance donations may be provided for travel related to chronic care treatment such as chemotherapy, radiation, or dialysis. Costs for a travel escort are not eligible for coverage.

Major/Catastrophic Illness

Financial assistance donations may be provided to assist with expenses resulting from a physical accident or hospitalization. The patient may apply only once for assistance. Costs for a family member or friend to serve as a travel escort are not eligible. Preventative care expenses—including exploratory, diagnostic, or routine visits—are not covered.

Emergency Assistance

Limited to one financial assistance donation per household. This special category provides assistance for essential needs such as shelter, heat, or utilities only. This is a one-time donation intended to assist during extreme hardship situations and is not a supplemental payment to other donation programs. Applicants are expected to have exhausted all other available resources prior to applying. Payments will be made directly to vendors.

Application Procedures

To apply, applicants must submit a completed application form with all required supporting documents attached. The application must be signed by the applicant, head of household, or legal guardian of the eligible Tribal member or ANCSA shareholder.

Supporting documents may include:

Eviction notice

Utility shut-off notice

Fuel Bill

Official medical statement, copy of death certificate, or obituary notice

Financial assistance donations will be paid by check, made payable directly to the vendor unless other arrangements have been approved. Checks will be issued as quickly as possible depending on the availability of funds; however, please allow a minimum of 7–10 business days for processing.
